Interdependent  is part two of a series of short dance-films/studies which explore identity, human connectedness, and the ability to adapt and grow. Interdependent is inspired by the work of scholar/activist adrienne maree brown’s framework Emergent Strategy, which creates large-scale growth in communities through small-scale growth in individuals who make up said community. impetus (2020)

impetus (2020) is part one of a series of short dance-films/studies which explore identity, human connectedness, and the ability to adapt and grow. impetus is inspired by the work of scholar/activist adrienne maree brown’s framework Emergent Strategy, specifically the element of “intentional adaptation”—the idea that humans can willingly and intentionally change in ways that align their daily actions with their larger values and beliefs. The film explores the space between self and society as a womxn (KerryLyn Kercher) embarks on the process of intentional adaptation by stopping to reflect on what makes her unique, how society has shaped her identity, and how she can actively grow into the person she wants to become.

Impetus was nominated by the Ohio State University for the 2021 inaugural ACDA Screen Dance Festival and selected for the ACDA festival Gala Concert.

Quarantine Daydreams (2020)

Quarantine Daydreams (2020) is a short dance-film inspired by Composition C (No. III with Red, Yellow, and Blue) by Piet Mondrian. Prior to the first World War, Mondrian was known for his representational style, with hints of abstraction sprinkled into his aesthetic. Composition C was created in 1935 as a response to the war and is categorized as De Stijl or Neoplasticism in style. Neoplasticism became popular in the Netherlands by artists and architects as a way of redefining or reinventing reality during times of difficulty caused by WWI by reducing, simplifying, and purifying their surrounding environment through art. As an artist Michaela finds themself being drawn into art—visual, performative, musical—that allows the viewer to reinvent their reality and thought this would be an interesting opportunity to explore this idea through movement and film. The urge to explore social justice, politics, art, and reality is intensified by today's current social and political environment caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. Inspired by the geometry, color, simplicity and linearity of Mondrian's original work, Quarantine Daydreams takes the viewer on a journey from the mundane, colorless, anxiety-driving repetition of a day-in-the-life of Covid out into a new world full of color, fresh air, and joyous movement.
